Third Week of Lent

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.

This hymn we pray with again today reminds us that we are prone to wander, . . . prone to leave the God I love. We are like the woman at the well; we know that life on our own terms is insufficient, so we wander and search for more. But because we are trying to solve the symptoms of our restlessness, and not the cause, we only feel more scattered and distracted.
Jesus helps us confront the cause of our restlessness this Lent; he did exactly that with the woman at the well. He could have stepped around the uncomfortable facts of her life in their dialogue, but he went right to the place of her greatest insecurity. He helped her see the ways she was hurting and then called her to a new life in him.
God does not avoid the parts of our lives that are uncomfortable; he wants all of us. He wants to heal us precisely in the places we are wounded. Our task this Lent is simply to bind our wandering hearts to him.

Prayer for Morning

Loving Creator, you made us to know, love, and serve you. Grant me the freedom to give myself to you. Loving Father, take my heart.

Ponder Today

How am I prone to wander? How can I return to God when I feel pulled away?

Prayer for Evening

Loving Creator, you never stop pursuing us to draw us deeper into the life you intend for us. Loving Father, bind my heart to you.
