1-13 The Old Testament: Wrestling with Troubling Verses

Room: 305

Session 1: 9:30 am – 11:00 am

It is perfectly normal in Christian life to feel responsible and even answerable to “Scripture” in our Christian lives, but what about some of those deeply troubling passages, especially in the Old Testament? Is there a way to raise questions without dismissing the Old Testament completely…hoping it will change while we aren’t looking? Is there a way to answer fundamentalist insistence that “its all literal”, while maintaining a deep engagement with the whole Bible? Come explore some ways to stop worrying and learn to love the Old Testament!

Dr. Daniel L. Smith-Christopher has taught Old Testament at Loyola Marymount University for 27 years. Author of many books and articles, he has a particular interest in cross-cultural interpretation of Scripture, and issues of Scripture, Social Justice, and peacemaking. At present, Dr. Christopher serves as Director of Graduate Studies in Theology at LMU, and would love to talk to anyone about Graduate Work in Theology at LMU!
