Lamb of God

Lamb of God

John 1:35-36

Your cousin John looked upon you
With clear eyes that penetrated deeply.
“Behold the Lamb of God,” John pronounced
As he singled you out with admiration,
Inviting all to see what his inner eye saw.
When John beheld your boundless compassion
He knew you were able to give your life freely.
For he observed what others had not seen:
A strong, courageous, loving human being
Willing to speak the truth openly to all.

Today : I behold the Lamb of God with my inner eye.

Fountain of Mercy

Fountain of Mercy

Edward Hays

You would pour your flowing love
Profusely upon my calloused deeds
And rinse them with your forgiveness.
But I would prefer to blame others
Than to acknowledge my own faults.
I would rather look away in denial
Than look toward my actual omissions.
I would choose to forget my offenses
Instead of admitting I have done wrong.
Yet, you remain a Fountain of Mercy.

Today : I bathe in the Fountain of Mercy.

The Crucified

The Crucified

John 19:17-23

Once on the cross, more than enough.
But your crucifixion goes on today
In killings, rapes, and war devastation,
Innocent ones maimed and abused,
Martyred ones speaking out for justice,
Brave ones protecting the defenseless,
All those men and women who die
Working tirelessly for the good of others.
When will your crucifixion end?
Not until everyone is a person of love.

Today : I live as a person of love.

Servant of Others

Servant of Others

John 13:16

You lovingly washed your disciples’ feet,
Dirty, smelly as they must have been.
And I, who want to be of service
So quickly turn away from the difficult,
Try to ease my way out of anything
That takes too much of my precious time
Or asks more than I am wanting to give.
When will I come to accept the reality
That following your example of service
Requires more than seeking my own comfort?

Today : I act in accordance with the Servant of Others.

Voice of Freedom

Voice of Freedom

Calling softly to my secret self.
Offering space to try again.
Asking trust when I cave in to fear.
Urging me to stand with strength.
Whispering daily encouragement.
Pleading with me to take risks.
Warning when I am in trouble.
Affirming belief in my endeavors.
Reminding me time and again
To liberate my wings of goodness.

Today : I listen.

Necessary Being

Necessary Being

Beatrice Bruteau

You comfort me
When I am hurting.
You draw me to others
When I am loving.
You inspire me
When I am rejoicing.
You encourage me
When I am growing.
You are always there.
Do I need you? Oh, yes!

Today : I recognize my need.

Gracious Creator

Gracious Creator

Edward Hays

Today, at this precise moment,
The effects of your graciousness
Are evident throughout my body.
My countless cells keep changing
As my strength and health renew.
My heart beats it’s steady rhythm.
My lungs securely breathe in air.
My whole being responds with ease,
Nurtured by your creative love.
My thankful spirit fills with wonder.

Today : I am grateful to my Gracious Creator.

My Help

My Help

Psalm 121:2

Looking back on my life
I cannot count the times
I’ve called for your aid.
Looking back on my life
I cannot count the times
You were there for me.
Looking back on my life
I cannot count the times
When I forgot you were near,
And fell into the pit of my woes.

Today : When I need My Help, I call out.

Shekinah

Shekinah

Jewish

Oh, the power of your steady presence
Sweeping through the soul’s journey!
Although you are invisible and unseen
You come to dwell among the people
As a guide through the long wilderness,
A light of assurance and remembrance.
Your spirit resides in the Tabernacle
And in meeting places of soul with divinity.
In you, Shekinah, is found the paradox
Of your remoteness and your nearness.

Today : Shekinah resides within the tabernacle of myself.

Liberator God

Liberator God

Edward Hays

How often we find ourselves
In a prison of our own making,
Held by resentment and hostility
Or cultural pressures to look good,
Pressed by the need to be right,
Caught up in heartless criticism
Or useless apprehensions.
You free us from one prison cell,
But then we move to another.
Help us to be fully liberated.

Today : I leave behind something that imprisons me.
