A-19 | 110 | Tending the Holy: Nurturing the Grounds for Spiritual Growth

Room 110
Speaker: Andy Rebollar

As catechists, it’s essential we too are growing in our relationship with Christ, but it can be challenging knowing there’s nothing specific we can do to make spiritual growth happen. Our growth is entirely dependent on God’s grace; all we can do is make the ground a little more fertile. This session will  explore some practices that can help make our spiritual grounds more productive, so when the time is right, we will be ready for what God invites forth.

Join this session to learn the causes of anxiety but also how we can structure our homes and communities to help combat its effects.

A-20 | 213 | Young Adults as Leaders

Room 213
Speaker: Chris Baker

Would you be willing to challenge the current young adult ministry models? What if doing so meant   you would end up engaging more young adults than ever before? What if doing so meant you could stop spending all your time and energy on young adult events that only draw a handful of young adults? What if doing so meant you could grow your attendance past the same handful of young adults who show up to everything you do? We will explore how using practical tools for encountering and accompanying young adults will shift the focus from an event-centered approach to an approach that empowers young adults for leadership. When young adults are engaged, empowered and equipped to discover their God-given strengths and shown how to awaken the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives, they will become the next generation of strong, Catholic, Spirit-filled leaders our parishes, cities, dioceses need them to be.

C-5 | 303 | The Rules of Engagement

Room 303
Speaker: Mike Patin

Church leaders bemoan the declining numbers of teens and adults. Sometimes we believe it is because people simply want to be entertained. People want to be ENGAGED. In this digital generation, what values or principles do we use to “bring people in” to catechesis and ministry?

C-8 | 207 | Metaphysics for Catholics, Metaphysics for Everyone

Room 207
Speaker: Dr. Mark Pestana

Our understanding of the ultimate nature of reality is the basis of our very existence in the world. The most fundamental differences between people are rooted in differences in their most basic ideas about reality. Metaphysics is the systematic inquiry into the fundamental nature of reality and has always figured prominently in Christian philosophy. In this session we will explore this unusual type of investigation as it was carried out by the greatest metaphysician of western civilization – Thomas Aquinas. Such an exploration will help us achieve a deep understanding of the Christian worldview and how it differs from the fundamental metaphysical views of other peoples. In the course of our investigation we will also examine Thomas Aquinas’s’ understanding of the relationships between metaphysics and the empirical sciences, between metaphysics and revelation, and between metaphysics and Christina theology. The relevance of metaphysical knowledge to everyday Christian life will be our concluding topic.
