The Bible and Prayer

Location: JCWC: International Lounge

Tuesday: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Tuesday: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Wednesday: 9:00 am – Noon
Wednesday: 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

It’s no exaggeration to say that prayer and its relationship to the Bible are among the most important topics we can examine. That’s because we come to know God through the Bible  and commune with him through prayer. They’re meant to go together. In fact, an entire section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is dedicated to prayer. The Church knows that we can’t make it through this life and into heaven without the power of prayer. It is the beginning of a relationship meant to last for an eternity.

The Bible and Prayer explores the human quest for God, unveiling the true nature of prayer: what it is, how it works, and the bountiful blessings available to those who walk the path of intimacy with God. It looks at the prayer lives of the towering figures of salvation history in both the Old and New Testaments showing the different forms our communication with God can take. Decidedly practical, The Bible and Prayer also examines the ins and outs of the three types or modes of prayer every Catholic is called to engage in: vocal prayer, meditation, and contemplation. Lectio Divina, Liturgy of the Hours, and many essential characteristics of prayer are also covered. The series culminates in a study of the prayer life of Jesus Christ, the ultimate example of how to commune with our Father. The goal of The Bible and Prayer is to help Catholics begin a process on earth that leads to nothing less than sharing in the divinity of God in heaven. (2 Pt 1:4)

The Bible and the Church Fathers

Location: JCWC: Gentile Gallery

Tuesday: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Tuesday: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Wednesday: 9:00 am – Noon
Wednesday: 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

The Bible and the Church Fathers explores what the Bible teaches us about the Mass. It looks at the ultimate meaning of the Eucharistic sacrifice and how what happens at Mass relates to God’s covenant dealings with Israel. Through the Liturgy of the eucharist we offer ourselves back to God.

Starting with the Old Testament, The Bible and the Mass traces the lineage of sacrificial ritual to where Christ transforms ritual worship in the sacrifice of the New Covenant. You will see that what we do on earth is a participation in the liturgy of heaven. You will also see that in the Mass the Kingdom of God is made present. The study concludes by focusing on one of the deepest meanings of the Mass – the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

“Well, after 12 years of Catholic school, over 30 years of the faith – why did I not know this sooner?!”

Genesis to Jesus

Location: Cosmas & Damian: Pugliese Auditorium

Tuesday: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Tuesday: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Wednesday: 8:45 am – 11:45 am
Wednesday: 2:00 pm – 3:45 pm
Wednesday: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

The first study in the series, Genesis to Jesus looks at the whole story of biblical history as the series of covenants that God has made with his people from creation through the present. You will learn how all of the various covenants that God made with his people in the Old Testament are fulfilled in Christ and the Church.

This is precisely the way that the Church reads the Sacred Scriptures in the Liturgy; we see the promises proclaimed in the Old Testament fulfilled in the New. This study is a great introduction to the Bible with something for everyone, from beginners to more advanced students of Scripture.

“I can understand the New Testament so much better and appreciate the Old Testament so much more.”
