Circulation Transitions

Is your publication having difficulty maintaining circulation, subscription revenue, and relevance in the digital era? Perhaps it is time to rethink traditional subscription models. In this session, two veterans of the Catholic press will share how their publications have changed with the times.

Tom Dermody will explain the Delivering Unity Campaign that since 2011 has used page sponsorships and four different levels of giving to fund the print and digital outreaches of The Catholic Post in Peoria.

Chris Gunty will “review” the first year of implementation of a new strategic plan in Baltimore, including the transition of The Catholic Review to a monthly magazine along with enhancement of website content, social media, and the addition of new tools to communicate with Catholics. The session will include plenty of time for questions and participant-sharing of what’s working in other regions.

Tom Dermody is a 38-year veteran of the Catholic press and has served as editor-in-chief of The Catholic Post, the newspaper of the Diocese of Peoria, since 1995. Named outstanding graduate in journalism at Bradley University in 1979, he was mentored in the Catholic press by two CPA legends – Msgr. Robert G. Peters and Albina Aspell. In 2011, he guided a redesign of The Catholic Post and created a new subscription model called the Delivering Unity Campaign. When not on deadline, Tom enjoys tennis, reading, piano and occasional songwriting. Tom and his wife, Cindy, have been married for 32 years and have one daughter, Colleen, who teaches at a Catholic school in Des Moines.

A Chicago-area native, Chris Gunty has been associate publisher/editor of The Catholic Review and CEO of its parent publishing company, The Cathedral Foundation/CR Media since 2009.

He has spent his whole professional career so far — 36 years — in Catholic journalism as a writer, photographer, editor, circulation manager and associate publisher. He spent four years with The Chicago Catholic; 19 years as founding editor and associate publisher of The Catholic Sun in Phoenix, Ariz.; and six years at The Florida Catholic, a group of six zoned newspapers serving most of the dioceses of Florida.

Chris served as president of the Catholic Press Association from 1996 to 1998.

Chris has three children and four granddaughters, with another on the way. His wife, Ann Augherton, is managing editor of the Arlington Catholic Herald newspaper in Virginia.

2:30 pm | Think Like a Theologian; Write Like a Newshound

Presenter: Fr. Richard L’Archer

Thursday, June 22 at 2:30

Think Like a Theologian; Write Like a Newshound

The importance of theological nuances in our Christian and Catholic writings is not trivial. Doctoral studies are not to be neglected, but they alone cannot guarantee the theological nuances. It takes a lot more than that.

This workshop will lead you to realize that your whole being must be at the service of theological shades. Your humility, your intellectual rigor and your personal integrity are three mechanisms necessary to bring these theological nuances. At the end of the workshop, I dare to believe and hope that you will have grown humanly and spiritually and that your concern for nuances will no longer be based solely on your intellectual knowledge but on your whole being which is and must remain in search of the overall theological shades.

Welcome to this workshop.

Richard L’Archer
My Master University Degree in Divinity and the Adults Faith Education that I have taught led me to this wonderful world of the New Evangelization.

After obtaining a Diploma in Philosophy, I went on to acquire my Master focused on Theological-Anthropology, by writing a theses entitled “The body in the image of God according to Irenaeus of Lyons”. After being general manager of hotels, real estate agent, plane pilot, sales Representative and so many other things, I was ordained a priest on November 1st, 2002. Though most of my wounds have been “healed” I remain attentive to preserve the dignity of people. My teaching is anchored in the law of Jesus: “Love one another” which I translate in our modern world by: The reference is the other.

Building Lasting & Profitable Relationships with Advertisers

Money can’t buy one of the most important things you need to manage your business: a relationship. Relationships don’t just happen; your intentional words and actions develop and grow them. Your network begins with those closest to you – your family and friends, department staff, diocesan staff – and then moves outward to schools, parishes and people all around, both within and outside of your diocese. Learn how to influence others, establish trust, and build mutually beneficial, lasting relationships. Your ministry depends on it.

Amy Kawula has served the Diocese of Green Bay the past 31 years and is currently the advertising and marketing manager at The Compass. During this time, she has served nearly every department of the diocese. This has allowed her to develop the relationships with staff, parishes, schools and the community that have contributed to successful marketing strategies and increased revenue for The Compass.

In addition to being the only advertising sales person, she manages circulation, annual pilgrimages and several diocesan events each year. She has been instrumental in implementing and launching two new websites for The Compass by creating the advertising rate card, implementing online ad sizes and following through with sales. Revenue from print/online advertising sales and pilgrimages has increased annually over the 12 years she has served in her current position.

She believes in honesty, integrity and genuine care for the unique needs of each person is critical to leading a successful team.
