Bishop Robert Baker

Bishop Robert Baker has led the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama since October 2, 2007. Born in Willard, Ohio, Bishop Baker studied at both the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1970, and his first assignment was as assistant pastor of St Paul’s Parish in Jacksonville Beach. He also taught at Bishop Kenny High School for two years, directing the school’s Department of Religion in 1971. After that, he served at St. Augustine Catholic Church and Catholic Gators, then became a faculty member of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, and then served as pastor of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine from 1984 to 1999, and later served as pastor of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was ordained a bishop in 1999 and served as bishop of the Diocese of Charleston, S.C. until 2007.
