Deacon Steve Swope was ordained to the permanent diaconate on Feb. 8, 2008, and is assigned to St. Mary Magdalene Church in Newnan.

He currently serves the Archdiocese of Atlanta as the chair of the Diaconate Scrutinies and Evaluation Committee and as a member of the Deacon Personnel Board. He is lead master of ceremonies at the Archdiocese of Atlanta Eucharistic Congress.

Deacon Swope formerly served as the associate director of formation for the permanent diaconate of the archdiocese and CEO of GWTW Partners, which has complete oversight of the use and intellectual property protection of Margaret Mitchell’s award-winning novel, “Gone With the Wind.”

He is a Catholic Relief Services (CRS) global fellow ambassador educator and has traveled with CRS overseas to witness the work being done by the American church on behalf of the poorest in the world. Most recently, Deacon Swope traveled to Greece and Serbia on behalf of CRS to engage with those working to alleviate the plight of refugees fleeing Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

In addition, the deacon is a member of the National Association of Diaconate Directors and serves on the board for patrons of the Donald W. Nixon Centre for Performing & Visual Arts and Newnan-Coweta County Airport Authority. He and his wife, Marie, support Communities In Schools and serve as mentors/tutors each week at a Title I elementary school.

Before joining the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Deacon Swope’s business career was in the travel industry. He was one of the founders of The Rubicon Group, a company that provided critical business intelligence and pricing guidance to travel and hospitality industries. Deacon Swope served as the president and CEO of Rubicon from its inception until the sale of the company in early 2011.

Deacon Swope frequently speaks about topics that include the worldwide refugee crisis, permanent diaconate, travel industry, entrepreneurship and the development and operation of a successful company.

He enjoys travel and reading, as well as playing the banjo and golf, but not all at the same time. Deacon Swope and his wife live on a small farm outside of Newnan, where they raise chickens, grow vegetables and find time to relax. They have two adult children, Jennifer and Matthew. Jennifer resides in Washington, D.C. with her husband, Toby, and their two children, Eleanor and Henry. Matthew resides in Newnan and is an assistant district attorney in the Coweta Judicial Circuit.
