Telling Stories With Pictures
Drawing on his extensive experience in different newsroom roles, Petricevic will share strategies and practical tips for enhancing your publication’s visual impact. This session will help you: Increase your chances of getting high-quality images from each assignment; choose the most appropriate image for your audience; and discern the most effective photo cropping for your publication platform. In addition to discussing how to handle images for print publications, this session will address photography for online posting and, in the age of mobile phones, some effective phonography techniques.
Mirko Petricevic’s career in print journalism as a reporter, photographer and copy editor spans three decades. His photos have appeared in the New York Times, Miami Herald and some of Canada’s largest newspapers and magazines. From 1986 to 2014 he was on staff at the Waterloo Region Record daily newspaper where he dedicated nine years to the religion beat (2001-2010).
He was its religion reporter when the Religion Newswriters Association honoured The Record with a Schachern Award for having the best religion section, in a newspaper under 100,000 circulation, for work in 2005.
Petricevic holds a Master of Theological Studies degree from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary where he now serves as director of communications and public affairs. He also holds an MA in journalism and a bachelor’s degree in photography.
