Franciscan LEAD Participants
If members of your group participated in Franciscan LEAD, they will be waiting for you at Shirreff Hall when you check in. Please tell our check-in volunteers that you are looking for LEAD participants and you’ll be directed where to pick them up.
Check In & Check Out
Group check in is at Shirreff Hall (6385 South St) on Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. At check in you’ll receive room assignments, room keys, and lanyards for your entire group. You will not receive water bottles for your group; these will be in each participant’s room. You’ll also receive important information about the weekend and have an opportunity to ask any last-minute questions.
Check out is 1 p.m. on Sunday. We ask that group leaders collect keys from all participants in their group and return them to the residence front desk by noon. Return the keys along with the group list that you signed and received when you checked in on Friday. Please return your group’s keys together rather than asking participants to drop their own keys off individually. When the keys are returned individually it is more likely that mistakes will be made in accounting for them, and therefore that groups may be charged in error for lost keys.
Responsibilities
The Role of Chaperones
- The primary role of the chaperone is to provide a safe and healthy environment for the youth participants. Full awareness and enforcement of the rules and policies governing participant behaviour as set forth by Steubenville Atlantic is mandatory. Adult chaperones are the primary disciplinarians and are responsible for their youth at all times: during all sessions, free time, and in the residences.
- Chaperones need to be aware of the physical, emotional, and spiritual state of their youth during the conference. Being present and engaged with the youth during free time and designated small group time will greatly aid in this. Chaperones need to communicate any serious problems or issues to their group leader and conference staff.
- Chaperones need to be present with their youth during all the scheduled sessions. By experiencing the conference together, chaperones and youth will be able to talk about the different topics and issues. The chaperones will also be able to help young people with any confusion or doubt as well as pray with them.
Providing a Safe Environment
Chaperones should avoid any situation where they might be compromised (e.g. being alone with a youth behind closed doors) or violate their Responsible Ministry and Safe Environment protocols.

SALT
WHAT IS SALT (SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING) PROGRAM?
SALT is a four-day retreat immersed in the sacraments and rich in prayer and Scripture just for young adults ages 18-22. SALT focuses on equipping young adults with the tools they need to take their faith to the next level and become servant leaders in the example of Christ and the saints. Since an intimate relationship with Jesus is vital in our lives as Christians, SALT participants are introduced to many forms of prayer to strengthen their daily prayer lives. The week includes training on sharing a personal testimony to help young adults become confident in their role as disciples and witnesses of Christ and his love. Community and accountability are emphasized, and SALT participants become support systems for each other for years to come.
Once the retreat portion is over, SALT participants have the unique opportunity to serve the Steubenville SoCal (OC-San Diego) conferences. It is an incredible opportunity to give back to the same event that, in many cases, had a profound impact on them as younger teens. During the weekend, SALT participants assist conference staff and volunteers in assuring that high school participants have the best experience possible. Some may also have the opportunity to serve in liturgical roles during Mass and adoration.
WHEN DOES SALT TAKE PLACE?
The SALT program will begin on the Tuesday before the Conference weekend and ends on Sunday. The SALT team will remain together for the weekend and will not join their youth or young adult groups on Friday. However, they will have the opportunity to greet their groups when they arrive and may travel back home with them Sunday afternoon.
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM COST?
The entire program costs $300, which includes food and lodging for the whole week, registration fees for the retreat and Steubenville conference, SALT training booklet, and SALT shirt.
