Responsibilities

GUIDELINES FOR GROUP LEADERS AND CHAPERONES

ALL adults attending the conference must be in compliance with the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Please check with your diocesan personnel office with questions regarding this matter. Each diocese has its own requirements to meet in order to be in compliance. Your signature, along with your pastor’s, on the Verification Form for Adults, states that all of your adults are in compliance with your diocese’s requirements. For more information on this, please visit www.usccb.org.  It is recommended that chaperones be Catholic.

Group leaders are asked to give an emergency contact cell phone number when registering and to keep that cell phone with them and turned on all weekend.

Chaperones must be totally committed to following all of the conference policies and procedures.

A CHAPERONE MUST ACCOMPANY HIS/HER GROUP to every general session of the conference.

CHAPERONES MUST BE AVAILABLE during TRAVEL, SESSIONS, and SLEEPING HOURS.

Chaperones should PREPARE SPIRITUALLY FOR THE TASK OF CHAPERONING. Group leaders may want to have a retreat, a training day, a weekly prayer meeting, or some method of providing support and encouragement to chaperones.

Chaperones should meet with their small groups at least two months before the conference. This gives chaperones the opportunity to get to know the members of their group and also for the youth to get to know each other. This will begin to build the trust that is needed for the weekend.

It is very important that a chaperone BE MADE AWARE OF ANY SPECIAL NEEDS of the youth in his/her group. This includes health problems, family problems, and any additional information that may help the chaperones to minister more effectively.

Fr. Rick Martignetti, OFM

Father Rick Martignetti, OFM, is a Franciscan priest from Boston, Massachusetts, currently working with households and teaching theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He has given it some thought, and the superpower he would most like to have would be teleportation. Invisibility is morally problematic and flying is cool, but it would mean continually scraping bugs off your forehead. Teleporting would allow for a daily visit to Assisi for morning cappucino by the tomb of St. Francis! Father Rick is the author of Hidden Beauty: Reflections on St. Bonaventure’s Tree of Life. Prayer Ministry

First Line of Defense

Thank you for your yes to care for and minister to the youth at the Steubenville Youth Conference!

The group leader and adult chaperones are the primary ministers to the youth on the weekend. Please be sure to share all of this information with all adult chaperones and religious in your group.

The Team of Prayer Ministers

Prayer ministers will be wearing green shirts and will be available during the conference. They may approach you to ask if you need assistance. Feel free to approach a prayer minister for help.

Role of Prayer Ministry

The role of prayer ministry is to serve and support you and your chaperones by offering spiritual assistance to the youth in your group. Prayer ministry is an extension of the ministry done by the ministry team from the stage and by you as the group leader and chaperones. They can assist you if there are several youth that need attention or if there is a particular situation that you and your chaperones are unsure how to handle.

Remaining Present

If a prayer minister does assist your youth, it is ideal to have an adult chaperone from your group present to watch over and pray with them also, as it is meaningful for the youth to have a familiar person there as well. In addition, it is the adult chaperone who will be going home with the youth. Therefore, he or she can continue to pray for and with the youth at home if needed. If this is not possible, know that the prayer minister will encourage the youth and let them know that group leaders and chaperones are there for them, if need be.

Franciscan LEAD Participants

Upon arrival with your group on Friday afternoon, please meet your LEAD participants in Meeting Room 3 on the third floor. LEAD participants will be eating dinner together on Saturday in Meeting Room 3 and participating in various presentations during the weekend.
