Franciscan LEAD Participants

How to Prepare for Franciscan LEAD

  1.      Daily Prayer

“Not by might, not by power but by my spirit says the Lord”( Zech. 4:6). Start by praying at least 10 minutes daily for your time with Franciscan LEAD. Find 10 people who will pray for you daily during your Franciscan LEAD week.

  1.       Prepare your mind

It is important that the Word of God is in our hearts and on our lips. Please memorize the Scripture verses below before arriving at your LEAD week.

  1.       Attitude is Everything

Being a leader includes leading by word and deed. The example you set and the words you use will have a huge impact. Start preparing now by focusing on Jesus in the midst of the good times and the hard times of your daily life.

Are you ready for the Challenge?!

Being chosen as a Franciscan LEAD participant is about answering a call to be challenged! This calls you to a level of responsibility. You have been chosen because you are a leader, you’re committed to growing in your faith, and you have a desire to evangelize. Be responsible! Please make sure to get your paperwork in on time and follow the guidelines for preparation, including memorizing the following Scripture verses:

Monday: We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

Tuesday: Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence. (1 Peter 3:15)

Wednesday: Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. (Rom. 12:2)

Thursday: A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

Friday: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. (Phil. 4:6)

Travel Information: Be sure to fill out your method of travel on the payment and travel form. Please arrive at Lincoln House, 701 East Boone Ave., Spokane, WA 99202 at Gonzaga University between 3 and 4 p.m. Monday, July 23.  PLEASE: If driving, no late night or early morning arrivals!  Arrive as close to 3 to 4 p.m. as possible.

Contact Information:

If you have any questions before the week begins, please contact Bob Falkner at 360-789-1265.

Please give your parents or guardians this phone number in case of an emergency during the week: 509-995-2751. (Maria)

Arrival and Check In

WHEN TO ARRIVE:  Check in will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 28, and continue until 4 p.m. The location will be the Hemmingson Center on Gonzaga’s campus, under the rotunda. When you arrive, there will be two stations: Dorm Check In and Registration Check In. Be prepared to sign off on all the dorm keys for your group. (When you return them, you will have to account for each one.) Packets and water bottles will be dispensed at Registration Check In. This is also where you will turn in your signed Codes of Conduct, pay any outstanding balances, etc. Once you’ve checked in, you can drop bags off in the dorm rooms, relax a bit, and report back to the Hemmingson Center, where the COG (cafeteria) is now located, at your assigned dinner time.

RED and BLUE will start at 4:30, YELLOW and  GREEN will start at 5:15.

If you arrive after check in has closed, your dorm keys will be available at Coughlin Hall, and your Group Leader Packet will be available at the Information Desk in the lobby of the Spokane Convention Center.

All adults and young adults in attendance MUST be cleared with a background check and proof of VIRTUS training.  Failure to do so will prohibit admittance to the conference. Additionally, all adults and young adults must read, sign, and submit the Catholic Diocese of Spokane CODE OF CONDUCT.  This form is available at https://www.spiritusnw.org/2018-supplemental-reg-forms.html

  • It is expected that youth and adults will follow the directions of ALL conference staff, security, and volunteers.
  • Any instances of lack of cooperation or insubordination will not be tolerated and will be subject to appropriate discipline.
  • All discipline problems regarding teenage participants will be brought to the attention of their group leader.

  • Chaperones must be aware of youth needs at all times, taking time to help them deal with any confusion. Make sure they are eating their meals and drinking enough water.
  • Chaperones agree not to take youth off campus while at the conference. In the case of an emergency, call 911 then conference center staff.
  • Chaperones and group leaders need to be sure that all conference participants (youth, young adults, chaperones, and group leaders) are present at scheduled sessions during the conference and in appropriate places following the evening sessions.

  • All state laws concerning alcohol and drugs (including tobacco) will be strictly enforced.
  • Possession and/or consumption of alcohol and/or drugs (including marijuana) is not permitted on site during the conference.

Group leaders and chaperones are expected to communicate these expectations to the youth before the conference and to enforce them at the conference:

  • Spokane can be hot in the summer; however, all participants are expected to dress in a fashion that represents modesty and good taste, respecting other participants and our Lord. As such, clothing must cover all undergarments and midriffs and be free from vulgar and/or distasteful language.
  • Participants are expected to use positive and up-building speech during the conference.
  • Foul and abusive language will not be permitted.

  • The weather radio is monitored at all times.
  • Remain in your location until notified.
  • Direction will be given from stage and overhead PA system.

Prayer Ministry

First Line of Defense

Thank you for your yes to care for and minister to the youth at the Steubenville Youth Conference!

The group leader and adult chaperones are the primary ministers to the youth on the weekend. Please be sure to share all of this information with all adult chaperones and religious in your group.

The Team of Prayer Ministers

Prayer ministers will be wearing lime green shirts and will be available on Friday and Saturday night and Sunday morning. They may approach you to ask if you need assistance. Feel free to approach a prayer minister for help.

Role of Prayer Ministry

The role of prayer ministry is to serve and support you and your chaperones by offering spiritual assistance to the youth in your group. Prayer ministry is an extension of the ministry done by the ministry team from the stage and by you as the group leader and chaperones. They can assist you if there are several youth that need attention or if there is a particular situation that you and your chaperones are unsure how to handle.

Remaining Present

If a prayer minister does assist your youth it is ideal to have an adult chaperone from your group present to watch over and pray with them as well, as it is good for the youth to have a familiar person present. In addition, it is the adult chaperone who will be going home with the youth. Therefore, he or she can continue to pray for and with the youth at home if needed. If this is not possible, know that the prayer minister will encourage the youth and let them know that group leaders and chaperones are there for them, if need be.
